Mayor's 2019 Summer Youth Employment Challenge


Mayor John Tecklenburg, in partnership with the 
Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce, recently announced the start of his 2019 Summer Youth Employment Challenge, which encourages local businesses to hire and mentor at least two youth during the summer months, and to offer at least 12 hours of paid work per week.

To join the growing list of participating businesses, complete the form linked here and return to Mindy Sturm at

Participating businesses commit to:

  • Hire on at least 2 youth for the summer months
  • Pay a reasonable wage
  • Provide at least 12 hours a week of employment
  • Effectively recruit, screen, and train youth
  • Provide a workplace mentor for youth to report to regarding work matters

In return, businesses receive:

  • Recognition as a Mayoral Summer Youth Employment Champion
  • Participation in the End of Summer Recognition Event highlighting businesses and youth
  • Quality work from the Youth Employees
  • In the long-term, an improved workforce from which to draw talent
